The Rewind Button: Marvin Gaye: What’s Going On

(The Rewind Button is a group blogging project.  Every Thursday, we review an album from Rolling Stone’s Greatest Albums list.)

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye is the sixth album on Rolling Stone’s list and I really enjoyed listening to it. It’s deeply soulful, no pun intended. I listened to it on a lazy night, just enjoying the music and listening to the lyrics. Unlike the other five albums, the  songs on this album are linked to each other.

Ok, you can argue that Highway 61‘s songs are linked but What’s Going On is linked not only by theme but by melody. The songs often run into each other, the note of the last song becoming the note of the next song. It’s a bit like a song cycle, which I think is mostly used in opera. The method suits the album because it’s a reflection of a man back from war and looking at what he left behind and fought for. It turns out it’s not all that great. The environment isn’t that great (Mercy, Mercy Me) Vietnam is happening (What’s Going On and What’s Happening Brother) and the social structure isn’t looking great (Right On).

The mood of the album, I think, conveys the daze of the protagonist. Yes, I’m exercising my literary degree on you. The protagonist is back from Vietnam. He’s walking what was once familiar ground but is realizing that it’s no longer familiar. Things have changed and he’s working on accepting change. When I first listened to the album I thought he was just a mellow guy then I thought, he’s not mellow, he’s trying to cope with life after the Vietnam war. It’s a mediation, that’s what this album is.  The protagonist’s love of children and God could be a way to reconnect with his surroundings with the innocence of children and the comfort of his God.

I could be overthinking this but this album, the seventh studio album from Gaye and the first time he used personal stories to create, is definitely my favourite for now.

See those? I want them. I want them badly but I haven’t bought them. I’m trying to be good but it’s really, really hard. I’m trying to keep my goals in mind to keep me from buying shoes I don’t really need and dresses I also don’t need. [Read more...]

Saving Money On Heat By Not Turning It On

Sweater, no holes, very warm

If you’re wondering why I’m not blogging about saving money on heat, it’s pretty simple.

It’s not cold enough in Toronto to justify turning on the heat. A sweater and a pair of wool socks works just fine. In fact, I’m wearing the wool sweater I darned a few nights ago.

I live in a building that’s about 25 years old. There’s a lot of concrete and I’m surrounded on all sides except one so my place stays quite warm. The one side that isn’t surrounded faces west so it warms up when the sun is out.

That can be a pain in the ass during summer but winter time it’s great.

Add a down duvet, flannel or jersey sheets (my friend Patti swears by them), a hot water bottle and I’m toasty warm. All of these bought off-season and on sale, of course. In fact, I got the queen-sized down duvet at a silent charity auction about seven years ago.

Plus I have nice sweaters. I should wear them.

Pantry

That is my pantry and yes, I drink Folgers coffee at home. As you can see, it’s half-empty right now. As part of my cooking at home task, I find I’m spending a bit of money (not a lot) buying basic stuff like stock, spices and legumes. [Read more...]

Vegetable scrap bag

Part of cooking is scraps. Prior to this project, I would throw out all the vegetable scraps but thanks to my friend, Dana, I have started keeping them in a bag tucked in my freezer.

The plan is to use them to make vegetable stock. We’ll see. [Read more...]

The Auntie Chronicles: Small but Mighty

Yesterday I went to pick up my niece from her daycare. Her parents were up north and weren’t going to make it home in time. My brother had asked me to babysit Niecelet.

I head out to the west end and after showing identification, got Niecelet. After telling me that her shoes were yucky, she cheerfully held my hand and we walked to the subway station.

Niecelet is two and likes to walk (run) everywhere. We were taking the TTC back to her home so that meant a lot of stairs. Niecelet happily navigated all the stairs while telling me she sang the ABCs.

What is all this leading up to? It’s this: two women cooed to us: “That’s a lot of stairs for a pretty little girl like you!” Fortunately Niecelet didn’t care but I wondered: What does being pretty have to do with walking up and down stairs? Are they suggesting that because she’s pretty she shouldn’t be on stairs? It’s not like I’m forcing her to walk. Am I overthinking this?

Niecelet is a pretty child but in our family we try not to emphasize prettiness above everything else. There’s brains, determination and ambition. We’re an ambitious family and there are certain expectations placed on all of us.

I’m already worried about how Niecelet will deal with the messages thrown at girls in our society. I like to think that the women and men who surround her: Her mother, grandmothers, aunts, father and grandfathers are all confident people.

In the meantime, Niecelet was happy walking up and down the stairs.

This is why I responded to the second person: “Oh, she’s fully capable of walking down the stairs and she’ll tell me when she’s tired.”

Loudly.
